Lake Classification

What is lake classification?

Adopted a classification system and significant shoreland ordinance upgrades (17 counties)
Working on a classification project (4 counties)
Gathered county lake data to update local surface waters inventory or to guide lake protection work (4 counties)
Have lake classification data (10 counties)
Lake classification is a flexible lake management tool counties can use to organize lakes into like groups (or classes) and tailor management approaches to meet the needs of lakes within each class. The lake classification process groups lakes with similar natural characteristics (such as lake size, watershed area, sensitivity to pollution and other development impacts, etc.) and characteristics relating to the pattern and intensity of development around the lakes.

Over 20 counties (see map) have classified their lakes and rivers and are using their classifications to better manage those waters.

How have counties used lake classification?

Many counties began by tailoring shoreland development standards to better protect the most pristine and most sensitive lakes, while leaving more liberal standards on lakes that were least sensitive and heavily developed. 17 counties have adopted classification systems, with different shoreland zoning rules for each water class. Classification has enabled counties to protect pristine shorelines with standards that exceed the statewide minimums. The outcomes are win-win:

  • better protection of communities' unique lakes and rivers,
  • opportunities for a range of recreational and waterfront living experiences
  • enhanced enjoyment of our waters for both waterfront property owners and users
  • protection and improvement of waterfront property values.

Other ways lake classification can help protect lakes

Classification can also help guide non-regulatory techniques such as: information and education programs, shoreland restoration projects, financial incentive programs, and voluntary land preservation programs.
