Citizen-based monitoring

Over 1,100 citizen volunteers statewide are collecting water quality data for over 850 Wisconsin lakes. Citizen Lake Monitoring volunteers collect basic water clarity information for their lakes. Many are also collecting data on temperature, chlorophyll, phosphorous, dissolved oxygen, aquatic plants, and exotic species invasions.

Clean Boats, Clean Waters program

This UW-Extension program trains volunteers to organize and conduct a boater education program in their community. Adults and youth teams educate boaters on how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies. Volunteers perform boat and trailer checks for invasive species, distribute informational brochures and collect and report any new water body infestations.

Citizen Lake Monitoring Network

Our goals are to collect high quality data, to educate and empower volunteers, and to share this data and knowledge. Volunteers measure water clarity, using the Secchi Disk method, as an indicator of water quality. Volunteers may also collect chemistry, temperature, and dissolved oxygen data, as well as identify and map plants, watch for the first appearance of Eurasian Water Milfoil near boat landings, or or alert officials about zebra mussel invasions on Wisconsin lakes.

Citizen Lake Monitoring Network training focuses on monitoring for specific aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels, rusty crayfish, and Eurasian water-milfoil. Participants review monitoring protocols for each species and interested participants receive monitoring equipment. Additionally, whole lake monitoring methods are discussed to assist participants in developing a proactive approach in early detection and rapid response efforts.
