Lake Nancy Lake Fair (July 2005)

“Residents who have a good understanding of Lake Nancy's environment will make better stewards for its healthy future.”
Where can you see raptors, learn about frogs, practice casting a fishing pole, play Lake Jeopardy, and make nature bracelets and water bug nets? All this was happening at the Lake Nancy Protective Association's (LNPA) first Lake Fair, which enjoyed a robust attendance of almost 180 people.

The focus of the Lake Fair was on children and continuing to develop their knowledge of and respect for the lake, its animals, and plants. There was bird identification and bugs to examine. The DNR provided fishing information and a conservation officer had boating guidelines. Participants could test the pH of lake water and try to identify samples of 17 different kinds of weeds from Lake Nancy. Visitors could learn about loons and create a lake painting. 125 adults and 51 children participated in these educational opportunities.

All children were presented with an Educational Lake Fair Bag containing a frog book, "Key to Life in the Pond" critter identification sheet, clean water activity books, critter viewing box with a magnifying lens in the lid, and other goodies. These Educational Lake Fair Bags had a label for the child's name and a label stating the contents of the bags, and were made possible by a youth grant from WAL. As the children wandered from station to station they were able to put the items they collected and made in their bags.
