2005 Wisconsin Lakes Convention

“Water in our Veins: Celebrating Lake Volunteers”

Attendees visited over 40 business partner exhibits and over 30 non-profit partner displays.

WAL presents our Wisconsin Stewardship Awards at the Lakes Convention. A group of 2005's winners.

Proceeds from the annual Silent Auction benefited WAL's Legal Action Fund and Youth Fund.

Two attendees voted for their favorite photo contest entries.

Continuing its tradition of success, the 27th annual Lakes Convention brought together 600 attendees interested in protecting Wisconsin's heritage and legacy of lakes. The convention is hosted each year by the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership, a nationally recognized and successful collaboration of the Wisconsin Association of Lakes (WAL), UW-Extension, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

This year's convention recognized the critical role Wisconsin citizen volunteers play in monitoring and maintaining the health of Wisconsin's 15,000 lakes.

Governor Jim Doyle, Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, Representative Scott Gunderson, and DNR Secretary Scott Hassett were among a number of policy makers who addressed this year’s gathering.

More than 50 educational presentations, led by Wisconsin water experts, explored current issues impacting Wisconsin waters including: aquatic invasive species; changes in water policy including revisions to shoreland zoning rules (NR 115) and pier rules (NR 326); the impacts of development; lake management success stories from Lake Associations across the state; youth education, and more.

Special sessions offered attendees a chance to meet other lake associations and business representatives, and displays showcasing water interests and purchasing opportunities from lake-friendly businesses and partner organizations.

The Spring 2005 edition of WAL's quarterly newsletter, The Lake Connection, published the following articles based on speeches and presentations at the workshop:

  • Protecting Wisconsin's lakes, protecting Wisconsin's values (Governor Jim Doyle)
